6060 Socw The psychoanalytic hypothesis of Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud is often referred to as the “Father of Psychoanalysis.” His theory was the first to suggest that early childhood events have an impact. Psychoanalytic theory, on the other hand, has been heavily criticized. Theories are produced in a sociocultural and political context, despite the fact that they are intended to be objective and value-free. With historical perspective, for example, it is easy to discern how values from the Western Victorian era influenced Freud’s theory
development. Another point of contention is that many psychoanalytical notions are impossible to quantify. How do you quantify the id, ego, and superego, or the concept of unconscious conflicts, for example? As a result, utilizing social
science research methodologies to assess the accuracy of these concepts is difficult.
It is vital to assess theories critically in order to put them into practice. Is it, for example, appropriate to apply a theory to varied populations or populations that differ from those for whom the theory was developed (e.g., women, racial and
ethnic minorities, and people who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are theories’ assumptions in line with the ideals that underpin the field? You react to some of these issues in this Discussion.
