Introduction
The paper talk about the group therapy techniques and the emphasis is on the main factors that are involved for instance the introduction part of a meeting, the techniques that are used by a facilitator in the group therapy and also how the group session can be kept lively.
We also focus on how we can manage a disruptive group member and lastly, we look at the merits and also the demerits of using the group therapy techniques.
What group therapy techniques were demonstrated?
In the group, various techniques were demonstrated, such as an introduction whereby the therapist or facilitators started by introducing herself.
The other group members mentioned their names, which helped in familiarizing and the members feeling more at ease and home (Malat, 2021).
How well do you believe these techniques were demonstrated?
The group rules are also mentioned, and the focus on confidentiality was emphasized. The other technique demonstrated was sharing the experiences that the members of the group went through. One member says about his depression and how he helped calm down the levels of depression.
Another member also explains how she tried to communicate with her neighbor to reduce the anxiety levels and how it went well and helped in relaxing her body (Malat, 2021).
The sharing of members’ progress from the last group meeting is another technique used in group therapy as the therapist asks to know whether they are making an impact on their schizophrenia condition.
What did you notice that the therapist did well?
The therapist also uses encouraging techniques in commending the group members in the case where an effect was made on the process of recovery or in an attempt to cope with society.
The therapist also uses clarification techniques in cases where the information conveyed was not clear enough either to her or to the other members of the group.
The different approach used in the video is encouragement and empathy. The therapist encourages the group members where they tried to correct their situation, and she also attempts to feel what the member sharing was going through in that particular moment (Malat, 2021).
The techniques used in this video are supported by the scholarly article written by Molyn Leszcz in group psychotherapy, where she focuses on the importance of group approaches and member interactions in psychotherapy.
She emphasizes the empathy and self-understanding requirement of the leader of a group to improve the members’ level of disclosure and confidence.
The therapist did very well in terms of group moderation and allocation of the time to speak by the members. She also appreciated the group members’ progress and even congratulated them where necessary.
After every confession, she offered a brief comment on the positive factors portrayed, which is very important in group psychotherapy (Malat, 2021).
Explain something that you would have handled differently
If I were moderating the group, I would ensure that the group is livelier and all the members participate fully while sharing their experiences or answering questions. Still, they should also ask questions where they are not well conversant (Malat, 2021).
What is an insight that you gained from watching the therapist handle the group therapy?
I gained some insight by watching how the therapist handles the group; for instance, I understood the importance of meeting goals by the end of the group session.
The group leader started by stating what the members needed to accomplish by the end of the session; for instance, the group had to learn breathing techniques before the session ended.
I also learned the significance of assessing the progress of the previous meetings based on the members’ experiences after the session and how they used what they learned to recover.
I also learned always to introduce the group members even if they already shared a session previously for them to be well conversant with each other.
The need to keep the group members comfortable at all times is also essential, and during the meetings, there should be moderation for all the members to be included in the discussion.
Now imagine you are leading your own group session. How would you go about handling a difficult situation with a disruptive group member?
While in a group session, I would deal with disruptive members by first trying to reason with them and explain the benefits of the group.
The emphasis on the group’s help may make the disruptive member change their mind on the group activities and be supportive. In a case where they continue being disruptive, then I will be forced to block that particular member from participating in the session to protect the interests and emotions of the rest of the group participants.
I can also use the energy of the resistance of the group member to fuel the session and even make it livelier. If the disruption is in the form of emotional abuse, I will reason with him cognitively on the importance of protecting other people’s emotions (Malat, 2021).
How would you elicit participation in your group?
I would elicit participation in the group by conducting individual therapy sessions for each group member. In the particular group session, I will emphasize the significance of being involved in the discussion personally, and I will also highlight the confidentiality of what will be shared (Ann, 2014).
What would you anticipate finding in the different phases of group therapy?
There are issues that I would anticipate finding in the stages of group therapy, such as difficulty in finding similarities between the members during the formation stage.
It could also prove challenging to deal with leadership issues during the storming phase. In the norming setting, management of conflict that arises within the group may prove complicated.
In the performance phase, the level of cooperation from the group members may significantly affect the group’s performance level.
In the closing stages, I may find it challenging to give the members the closure they need and assurance that they can continue with the recovery process even in the absence of our meetings (Ann, 2014).
What do you see as the benefits and challenges of group therapy?
Group therapy is very beneficial as the members are equipped with socialization skills, and it also creates a level of belonging and self-awareness as people interact with others with similar conditions.
The stigma story is reduced as interaction is pure with other affected individuals and facilitators.
The demerits include the difficulty of other people to open up and express their emotions as the members can feel like they are sharing their experiences with strangers (Substance abuse treatment, 2012).
The paper on group psychotherapy is a scholarly article on a study done by the University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital on group psychotherapy that details its history, how to form and conduct group discussions, among others.
The other article is on the stages of group development that was written based on a study conducted by the University of Minnesota. The last paper is on substance abuse and treatment by clinicians that is based on group therapy following a survey done by the Department of Health and Human Services.
