GRAD 695 Research Methodology and Writing
In this assignment you are expected to write the introduction and abstract sections of your research. Abstract should include the summary of your work, create an interest to the readers and a possible implication of your work, if successfully completed. Introduction section is important that you describe clearly but very brie?y the background, research problem, objectives, hypotheses (if any) and the contributions of your study to demonstrate your broad and deep understanding of your research topic.
So, your assignment report should include the following main headings and subheadings and you can also add any required subheadings:
– ABSTRACT
o Gives a brief summary of your work and of how you address the issue.
So, a typical abstract includes:
o A statement of the problem that you are addressing in your thesis
o An account of the procedure or methods, and
o An account of data analysis techniques, preliminary results (if any).
An abstract must not be more than 300 words and must end with keywords.
– INTRODUCTION
o All the survey background work, for the introduction part that you have done, is to be used in this chapter. It includes the broad introduction to thesis topic and method, research problem, research questions and objectives, hypotheses if any, significance of the study and the main contributions to the knowledge. You should also define central terms here to be understandable for the following sections. You are also expected to include at least 4-5 journal articles to give background information in this chapter.

o Background
? Provide a background, historical context and general overview of your selected research topic. It is important that you can describe clearly but very brie?y the background of your proposed thesis to demonstrate your broad and deep understanding of your research topic.
? Discuss brie?y what you intend to do after establishing the need to provide bridges between what may already be known about the ?eld and what still needs to be known. It also provides the structure to be followed in conducting the study. In other words, it is a birds eye-view of the proposed study.
o Problem Statement and Justification
? Provide a simple, clear and concise statement of your research problem. This must be specific e and measurable. It cannot be a high-level or generic statement.
? Summarize the primary purpose of your planned research. To achieve this primary purpose, summarize your research Strategy, Research Design, planned method of data collection, planned method of data analysis, data variables and the reasons for choosing your research design
? What are your primary research Objectives? What is your primary research question, and any secondary questions you intend to address? List and explain them here.
? State any / all Hypotheses that you intend to test. This may not be applied to all research (e.g. qualitative research) as mentioned in class.
? Summarize whether your research will be Quantitative, Qualitative or Mixed Methods and any important Study Design details.
o Significance of the study
? State the significance of the research. You should answer what new knowledge the proposed project will produce that we do not already know, why it is worth knowing and what the major implications are.
? Describe the contributions of your study to the existing body of knowledge.
o Limitations and delimitations of the study
? Any form of constraint, including time, financial or other should be recognized. What will your Thesis NOT address?
? Delimitations may include demographic or other forms of boundary.
o Ethical Considerations (if applicable)
? Are there any specific Ethical considerations attached to your research work? This is especially important if you will be working directly with people, animals or perhaps intellectual property.
o Overview of the study
? To aid the reviewer, summarize the remaining chapters, that follow your Introduction.
