Question 1: Modern Life Painting The late nineteenth century is frequently recognized as a turning point in the creation of modern art. Impressionists and Post-Impressionists used the modern world as their principal subject matter, depicting components of it in unique ways.
Examine the following works carefully: Monet, Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (In Sun), 1894 Manet, Bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1881-82 Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, c. 1884-86 Answer the following questions in three well-developed paragraphs: How is the topic of each picture characteristic of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism?
How does each painting’s style and visual features reflect Impressionism or Post-Impressionism? In your response, make sure to include specific features such as brushwork/painting application, color and light use, and composition.
Describe how each painting demonstrates a tension between its intrinsic two-dimensionality and any illusion of three-dimensionality generated by the artist.
Question 2: For many people, modern and contemporary art may appear alien, with no apparent content, message, or purpose. However, Modern and Contemporary Art can be claimed to graphically express the complicated and abstract ideas that we encounter on a daily basis. Although not for everyone, art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries makes up a large component of many art institutions’ collections. Consider visiting a modern art museum after learning about the various forms of modern and contemporary art we covered this week. Discuss in two well-developed paragraphs: What type of Modern or Contemporary art will you most like to see and why during your visit? What type will you put last on your list of “things to look for?” (e.g., Analytic Cubism, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism)? What is it that makes you feel that way?
Make sure to explain and defend your opinions by bringing up specific works of art that you’ve read about this week and describing how they exemplify and support your ideas. In your comment, include photographs of these specific works of art.
Answer both questions as completely as possible, incorporating material from the books and lectures. All responses should be written in full sentences with correct spelling and grammar.
Review and comment on the work of two of your classmates as quickly as feasible. Consider what areas you’d like to have expanded or clarified in your comments.
