Working Memory In this activity, participants play the role of a server in a restaurant. They will be given the task of taking customers’ orders both before and after studying memory tips, and will be prompted to reflect on how and why the memory tips work.
Complete the following activity and then answer the related questions.
Welcome to the Café Cogito Get your mental gears turning– we are slammed with customers tonight! Don’t even think about using a pen and paper to take orders, here at the Cogito we do it all in our heads! Don’t forget that the better you remember your orders, the faster you can serve the food; the faster you serve the food, the larger the tips serve the food, the larger the tips. How much you take home tonight will depend on how well you work your memory.
Question: – On your first day as a new employee for Fabulous Shoes, all the other workers call in sick. Consequently, you are the only person handling the customers. When the store opens, four customers approach you immediately and ask you to retrieve shoes for them. Steve, a little boy, needs size one snow boots. Hilda, a tall woman, needs size nine silver dress shoes. Oscar, a skinny, short man, needs size nine running shoes. Finally, Eloise, an older grandmother, needs size nine slippers. Based on the principles of working memory and associated memory techniques, what are some strategies you can use to help you select the correct shoes for each customer?

Trait Theory of Personality In this activity, students will evaluate the qualifications of five different job applicants for the role of manager at Café Cogito. They will be asked to review résumés, phone referrals, and personality tests to choose the candidate whose personality will best fit the position.
Complete the following activity and then answer the related questions.
Question: – Although trait theorists agree that five traits lie at the core of a person’s personality, they point out that individuals vary greatly in the degree and quantity to which a particular trait applies. Consider your own personality. Where do you think you fall (high versus low) on each of the Big Five traits? Was it easier to place yourself on some dimensions than on others? Do you think your personality is fully explained using only these five dimensions?
Ch-16

After having seen this video, what sort of personal and practical obstacles do you think these women are facing? What sort of resources could your facility provide them to ease their transition to widowhood
Ms. Sternberg: This was in Sicily, and I

0:04time there, didn’t you?
0:05Narr: At 80 years old, Judith Sternberg
0:07is living life in the fast lane.
0:10Ms. Sternberg: So this is a picture that, uh,
0:12was just taken of me at Pepsico.
0:14I think it’s great.
0:15It doesn’t even look like me.
0:16I look so young.
0:17Narr: Judith got married when she was 20
0:19and raised two sons.
0:21She’d been with her husband, Harry, for 50
0:23years when he died.
0:24For the first time in her life,
0:26she was alone.
0:27Ms. Sternberg: At one point, I hate to admit
0:29it, I was even thinking of suicide.
0:31But after-I looked in the mirror one day and
0:33I said to myself “You want to live?
0:35Then you better start living.”
0:36Ms. Sternberg: And this is what I loved.
0:38When we were in Russia…
0:39Narr: Judith spent a lot of time with her
0:42childhood friend, Helen.
0:43They began to travel together.
0:44And one day, online at the movies,
0:47she had an idea.
0:48Ms. Sternberg: And I said to Helen, I says
0:50″You know, instead of just being the two of
0:52us, why don’t we just have a group?”
0:54Female #1: She picked up the phone and heard
0:56her mother’s voice…
0:57Narr: This is the group they formed, the
0:59Westchester Women’s Network.
1:00It meets once a month.
1:02The women listen to a guest speaker, then
1:04gather around tables for a brown bag dinner
1:07and plan their social schedules.
1:09Ms. Sternberg: I had about, uh, eight or ten
1:11women start with me, and the next year, there
1:14were 20 women, and the next year, there were
1:1650 women, and now we’re up to over 120 women.
1:19Ms. Teshner: When my children ask me where
1:21I’ve been recently, I said, “Well,
1:23gallivanting with the ladies in the night.”
1:27Ms. Sternberg: We play a lot of bridge.
1:29We, uh, go to theater.
1:32We have dinner.
1:33It’s more comfortable.
1:35Narr: These women are part of a growing
1:37number of widows who are finding ways to
1:39enjoy life after their partner is gone.

1:44over 65 are widows.
1:46About 700,000 women lose their husbands each
1:49year and will be widows an average
1:51of 14 years.
1:52Only two percent of the women in
1:54this age group remarry.

1:58traditional stereotypes.
1:59They are increasingly independent.
2:02Many are working, or getting out
2:04and seeing the world.

2:11Service in New York, a national program
2:14affiliated with the AARP, which provides
2:17emotional support for people who’ve
2:19lost their mates.
2:20Ms. Harrington: We’re seeing the desire for
2:21independence, the desire not to wilt away and
2:24fall into the background.
2:25The desire to take charge.
2:26Ms. Sternberg: Look at this…
2:28Is that adorable?
2:29Narr: Judith Sternberg says grieving
2:31widows face a lot of obstacles, some
2:34emotional, some practical.
2:36She first learned to handle her finances when
2:38she was 71 years old.
2:40Ms. Sternberg: I had to learn
2:41a lot by myself.
2:42And you know what I found out?
2:44I found out I’m a very much stronger person.
2:46Ms. Sternberg: I think it’s stunning.
2:48Narr: Now she doesn’t rely on anyone.
2:50Female #2: I think the cut is…
2:52Ms. Sternberg: I decided that I want to
2:54be in charge.
2:55So while I get the opinion of my lawyer,
2:57my accountant, and my broker,
2:58I make the decisions.
2:59Narr: Judy’s friend, Marsha Teshner says
3:03there’s no room in her life for another man.
3:06Ms. Teshner: I’ve taken over the whole
3:08bedroom and all the closets and all the
3:11shelves in the bathroom and all the drawers,
3:14and I don’t know how I could share it.
3:16Narr: Judy is also enjoying life
3:18on her own.
3:19She says she doesn’t want to remarry.
3:21But she is dating.
3:23Ms. Sternberg: We keep each other
3:25from being lonely.
3:26And there’s nothing nicer than having a man
3:28say to you “You look great today” or holding
3:30hands, which I miss terribly.
