Writing Assignment #1 is due at 23:59 on October 3rd, 2018.
Write a 400-500-word essay about the paragraph below from Huang Chunming’s “Listen to Me, All You Deities.” Discuss the passage’s overall significance in the story, including its plot placement and, more significantly, how it illustrates the story’s core subject or themes. To do so, you’ll need to figure out what you think the story’s main themes are, and then discuss how this paragraph contributes to those themes. Feel free to debate both the passage’s content and the way it was written.
Your essay should include the following information:
Declare and defend a point or a set of points.
Make a clear statement about the point or points you want to make. It’s usually best to do this in a sentence at or near the start of your essay, or at or near the start of a certain paragraph.
Refer to the text you’re discussing to back up your claim. Put the quoted material within quotation marks if you’re quoting directly from the text.
Make the transition from one statement or idea to the next obvious to your reader.
The following is the passage:
Chunmu strolled along the path to the main road’s crossroads. His sons would not arrive for some time, and he had no idea how to pass the time. If someone asked if he’d come to the intersection to wait for them, he wouldn’t know and wouldn’t confirm. To change a tire, a tour bus had parked near one end of the neighboring bridge. He’d heard it was an island trip for nursing home residents in the south. The elderly passengers had off the bus; some were strolling around, while around a dozen sat still on the cement rails. One of them, a familiar face that resembled a beardless Kaizhang Shengwang, General Chen, who had brought peace to Zhangzhou, the ancestral city of many Taiwanese, caught Chunmu off guard. He shifted his gaze to the others. What’s interesting is that they all looked like the gods in his temple! The Earth God, Ji Gong the Crazy Monk, Lü Dongbing, one of the legendary eight immortals, Niupuza the Heavenly King, and others were among them. He was tempted to go up and talk to them, but instead he stood still and stared at the railing. The old guys sat there looking at various things, but their interest was heightened when they observed someone staring at them with an expression of surprise on his face. Chunmu spotted more familiar faces, Patriarch Qingshui and the King of Five Grains, who tasted a hundred herbs, now that they were all looking in his direction. Chunmu turned to leave, seized by an unexpected panic, but he looked down and saw the driver’s moist baby face. The driver raised his eyes to him, and ai! Wasn’t that Nezha, the Third Prince of the Rebellion?
Chunmu followed the trail, his heart racing, feigning calm strides despite the fact that he was walking awkwardly. What a stroke of luck. Is it, however, true? It might be if only one or two of them resembled gods, but what about all of them? Chunmu walked on, frightened thinking to himself, “That can’t be a coincidence.” All of you gods. You’ve misunderstood me. My words were profane, yet they had no negative connotation. To be honest, I have no malice in my heart. I swear to God. Let lightning strike me down and take away all my children and grandkids if I, Xie Chunmu, have any bad intentions.
