FORMAT: Include a separate cover page with your name, date, and class section (CRJU 3150) before your topic proposal. Your topic proposal should be a minimum of one paragraph (i.e., 4 to 5 sentences). GRADING: Research Topic Proposals are worth 5% of the final course grade. Students will be graded based on depth of ideas, completeness (i.e., adequately describing the required components), and quality of writing. Late assignments will be graded as 0.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Four data sets are posted in Canvas (Modules > Data > SPSS Data Sets and Documentation):
Brief introduction to your topic. E.g., What is your topic about? Is there a relevant criminological theory that relates to your topic?
Clear statement of your research question and hypothesis.
What is your research question?
What is your hypothesis (format as an if—then statement)?
Basic description of your intended data and methods.
What data set will you be using?
What is your independent variable?
What is your dependent variable? ?????????????????
List the data set you are using, your independent variable, and your dependent variable. When listing your variables, write out exactly how they appear in the SPSS data set (Name and Label).

(3) 2014 General Social Survey (GSS)
(4) 1992 to 2013 National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) lone offender assaults
Open each data set in SPSS. In the Variable View tab, explore the variable labels. Find two variables in the same dataset that you want to write your research paper about. The variables should be proposed to have a relationship with one another in that an increase or decrease in variable1 will be associated with an increase or decrease in variable2. IMPORTANT: the variables you choose MUST come from the SAME, single dataset.
