Letter to a Member of Congress (1- 2-pages)
As one of more than 3.6 million nurses in the United States, you have a unique opportunity to contribute your professional knowledge and impact policy at all levels of government. Professional nurse advocacy includes assisting essential projects in gaining state and national attention. After all, as the country’s most trusted profession (Norman, J., 2016), nurses can make a significant impact in the policy arena by actively advocating for patients.
Contacting and enlisting the support of persons in positions of power is one strategy to assure effective advocacy. In this Assessment, you will write a one- to two-page letter to a legislator about a local, state, or national policy that is similar to those that politicians receive on a daily basis. (Note: You must choose a different policy for this Area of Expertise than you did for prior Competencies.)
This exercise allows you to share your nursing knowledge with a legislator while also informing them of recent research that supports a policy perspective.
Step 1: Pick a policy topic that you care about on a local, state, or national level. Go to https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/advocacy/ to learn more about the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) lobbying efforts.
to learn more about the present state of nursing policy in the United States.
Step 2: Find politicians or policymakers in your city, state, or country to contact about the policy you’ve chosen. A list of local legislators in the United States can be found at:
OpenStates is an acronym for “open states” (n.d.). Find out who your legislators are. https://openstates.org/find your legislator/
www.usa.gov (n.d.). Here’s how to get in touch with your elected authorities. https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials
Step 3: Compose a letter advocating for a policy change.
To see a sample letter, go to http://www.aacnnursing.org/Portals/42/Policy/PDF/AACNPolicyHandbook 2010.pdf and look at pages 2223 of the AACN’s “From Patient Advocacy to Political Action: AACN’s Guide to Understanding Healthcare Policy and Politics.”
Format your letter as follows, using the AACN sample letter as a guide:
Describe your educational and professional background;
Using at least two instances, describe your qualifications and skills in a policy area.
Examine the crucial role that nurses have in enhancing care because they are on the front lines;
Summarize the essential points of the policy you’ve chosen;
Using at least two current, scholarly materials to support your position on the issue, defend your argument; and
Make at least two recommendations for policy change in relation to the policy you’ve chosen.
Remember to write your request in a respectful, professional, and direct manner. Avoid emotional arguments and concentrate solely on facts-based arguments.
