Study of an Ethical Case
Mrs. Peterson is an 82-year-old woman who lives in a long-term care facility’s Alzheimer’s unit. She was diagnosed with dementia a few years ago and moved to an Alzheimer’s unit six months ago after her 58-year-old husband, Mr. Peterson, was unable to care for her at home. Every day, Mr. Peterson paid a visit to the nursing home, and Mrs. Peterson was always delighted to see him. Julie, the nurse, walked into Mrs. Peterson’s room during an afternoon med pass and discovered her and Mr. Peterson in bed together, some of their clothes off. Julie waited until Mr. Peterson had left before returning to Mrs. Peterson’s room to discuss what had happened further. Mrs. Peterson expressed her love for her husband but was unable to respond to questions about whether she felt comfortable having sexual relations with him. Julie scheduled a meeting with the director of nursing and expressed her concerns about how Mrs. Peterson’s dementia might affect her ability to consent to sexual activity, and wondered if it was appropriate for Mr. Peterson to do so with his wife. The director of nursing was undecided about what to do.
