Article Summary and Reflection Assignment
Description
1. Written Article Summary and Reflection Paper: 9%
Each student will locate a relatively current (last ten years: i.e., 2010 or later) peer-reviewed journal article
that involves original research (e.g., not a literature review) relevant to your chosen topic.
You will use this article to prepare for the presentation and will use it as the basis for your paper.
Your Article Summary and Reflection paper will include the following components:
Article Summary: Summarize in your own words your chosen article by providing a brief description of the
introduction, methods, results, and discussion (you should separate your paper into these sections).
In the Introduction you will summarize what the authors said in the introductory section (e.g.,
What was the hypothesis? Why did the authors carry out this study? Why did the authors think their research
question was a good one? etc.).
In the Methods section you will summarize what the authors said in the methods section (e.g.,
How many participants did they test? Who were the participants? How did the authors carry out the research
(e.g., what were their test materials and their procedures? etc.).
In the Results section you will summarize what was said in the results (e.g., How did the authors
analyze the data? What were the main findings? etc.).
In the Discussion section you will summarize what was said in this concluding section (e.g.,
What did the authors think the results meant? Were the differences hypothesized significant? What, if any,
limitations were identified? What do the authors see as directions for future research?)
Reflection
Your paper should also include your opinion about the research. Your reflection should be a brief critical
analysis about the article and should include the following components:
2
What, in your opinion, were the studys strengths?
What do you see as the limitations of the study (beyond those mentioned by the authors)?
Based on the findings of this article, what do you see as implications for our understanding of this
area? How could we apply this information in real life?
What are potential directions for future research in this area?
In addition to these elements, your article summary will also be also be graded on the following:
Organization
Does the paper follow the appropriate format so that it is easy to follow the flow of ideas?
Does the paper use appropriate APA style for title page, in-text citations, and reference list?
Does the paper explain technical terms and avoid unnecessary jargon?
Are direct quotations used correctly and sparingly?
Written mechanics
Is the paper written in an appropriately formal manner for an academic paper?
Is the paper grammatically correct?
Is paper free from spelling errors, typos, or other mechanical errors (e.g., changes in font)?
The paper is to be four (4) pages double spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, not including title and
reference pages. You may slightly exceed the 4-page limit (by one short paragraph or less) but you will lose
marks if the paper is longer than 4 1/3 pages. The paper should not be less than 4 full pages.
Additional references: At the minimum, you must cite and reference your chosen article. You may also cite
and reference additional sources that may help to situate the article within the literature. For any source(s),
you will provide a correct APA style reference list.
