President Ho Chi Minh; September 2nd, 1945, after the French invaded Vietnam in the aftermath of World War II; Ba Dinh Square, Hanoi (Vietnam)
an Independence Proclamation (of the Republic of Vietnam)
The Declaration of Independence signaled the end of French colonialism in Vietnam and the beginning of a new era of “independence, freedom, and happiness.”
In order to show respect and a spirit of fraternity between the two countries, President Ho Chi Minh quoted the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen from the French Revolution in 1791. Ho Chi Minh was inspired by the French imperialists’ standard for their own country, “liberty, equality, and fraternity,” to establish Vietnam’s aspiration to be free and equal to France and other countries (Japan, China and later on the United States of America). As a result, to show support for the Alliance during World War 2, Vietnam formed the Viet Minh, a group of loyal patriots and nationalists. The Viet Minh had persuaded France to join Vietnam in fighting Japan fascists earlier in 1945, but France had a negative reaction, as they “intensify their terrorizing policy.” The French-Vietnamese war was brutal and had many negative consequences, including famine, loss of men, cultural shifts, and a scarcity of resources. Despite this, Ho Chi Minh maintained that “our fellow citizens have always manifested an attitude pervaded with toleration and humanity,” 5 in an attempt to persuade Vietnamese to maintain a friendly relationship with France in the near and long term.
-At the start of the source, Ho Chi Minh quoted Thomas Jefferson’s famous speech from the United States of America’s Declaration of Independence (1776). Ho Chi Minh shared the same belief that “all men are created equal,” demonstrating his desire to gain US support and improve relations between the two countries.
-By quoting the two famous declarations of France and the United States of America, Ho Chi Minh implies that Vietnam’s independence is just as important as the independence of other countries. Ho Chi Minh was a firm believer that Vietnam, like all other countries, deserved independence. “The people who have opposed French dominance, fought alongside the Allies against the fascists, such people must be free,” Ho Chi Minh stated at the end of the Declaration.
Declare Vietnam’s right to self-determination; state the devastating consequences of the wars; and describe Vietnam’s attitude toward France and the Allies during World War 2.
This indicates that, at the time, Vietnam desired to be free of French influence and progress as a sovereign nation. As a result, the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Vietnam is a call for decolonization.
3. Getting Rid of Colonialism
Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Vietnam, HO Chi Minh ( 1945 )
More than countless bombed buildings and millions of dead were part of World War II’s devastation. As colonial peoples around the world rose up against imperialist rule, the war fatally weakened the European powers’ grip on their empires. The Viet Minh, a small nationalist organization founded in French Indochina in 1939, rose to prominence in the aftermath of World War II as the French sought to reassert control over the region. The Viet Minh declared Vietnam’s independence from France less than a month after Japan surrendered, as noted in the following document. It was signed by “President Ho Chi Minh” ( 1890 – 1969 ), a founding member of the organization who had lived in Paris, Moscow, and China. The document uses language from the French Enlightenment to support the Viet Minh’s cause while condemning France’s.
How did World War II pave the way for Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of Vietnamese independence, as suggested in this document?
b.Vietnamese military might had been strengthened as a result of the war.
Which tactic did Ho Chi Minh use to bolster his case for Vietnamese independence?
c.Calling out the French imperialists’ hypocrisy
Why, in Ho’s opinion, did Vietnam deserve independence?
c.The Vietnamese, not the French, were the ones who fought the Japanese.
