Assignment of a Smart Parking Space
This project shows how data analytics may be used to develop plans for long-term organizational performance while also combining the mission of the business with social values. To uncover patterns and construct time-dependent demand models, you’ll use statistical time series modeling approaches. You’ll practice putting together and giving a presentation to senior executives. In addition to speaker notes, the PowerPoint presentation includes an audio component.

Scenario: A city’s government isn’t focused on increasing money or profits, but rather on enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. Many American cities are plagued by heavy traffic and gridlock. Finding a parking spot, whether on the street or in a parking lot, can take time and add to traffic congestion. To relieve traffic congestion and improve traffic flow, some cities have used data-driven parking spot management.
You work as a statistics analyst for a mid-sized city that is expecting major population and traffic growth. The city is weighing whether it is worthwhile to invest in infrastructure to count and report the number of parking spaces available in various parking lots throughout the city. This information would be collected and processed in real time, and fed into an app that motorists could use to locate available parking spaces in various parking lots throughout the city.
Instructions: Use the Excel database that has been provided. The columns in this database are as follows:
LotCode: A one-of-a-kind code that identifies a certain parking lot.
LotCapacity: A figure that represents the capacity of a parking lot.
LotOccupancy: A figure representing the number of cars currently parked in the parking lot.
TimeStamp: A date that indicates when the occupancy was measured.
Day: The weekday that corresponds to the TimeStamp.
Create a new column, OccupancyRate, to keep track of the occupancy rate as a percentage with one decimal place. For example, if the current LotOccupancy is 61 and the LotCapacity is 577, the OccupancyRate will be 10.6. (or 10.6 percent ).
Create box plots for each day of the week using the OccupancyRate and Day columns. Insert > Insert Statistic Chart >Box and Whisker might be used for this. Is the average occupancy rate consistent throughout the week? If not, what days of the week have the lowest median occupancy rates? On which days does the median occupancy rate tend to be higher? Is this what you were hoping for?
Create box plots for each parking lot using the OccupancyRate and LotCode columns. Insert > Insert Statistic Chart >Box and Whisker might be used for this. Do all parking lots have roughly the same occupancy rate? Is it true that some parking lots are busier than others? Is this what you were hoping for?
Choose any two parking lots. Prepare a scatter plot for each one, illustrating the occupancy rate against the day of the week for the week 11/20/201611/26/2016. Are occupancy rates affected by the passage of time? If so, when do you think the highest occupancy rates occur? Is this what you were hoping for?
Presentation:
Make a 10- to 12-slide presentation with audio and speaker notes. (If you can’t get the audio to work, you can write your narration for each slide in the notes section.) Your target audience is the members of the City Council who will decide whether or not the city invests in resources to implement the smart parking space app.
Fill in the blanks in your presentation:
Outline the project’s rationale and objectives.
Use boxplots to depict the occupancy rates on different days of the week. Include your thoughts on the results.
Use box plots to depict each parking lot’s occupancy rates. Include your thoughts on the results.
Provide scatter plots of the occupancy rate of your four parking lots versus the time of day. Include your thoughts on the results.
Make a recommendation on whether or not to continue with the project’s implementation.
