Students,
Given recent events and news, I’d like to share two articles with you about the corona virus and how it affects the disability community.
As with many current events, the disability community is disproportionately affected, both because it is a community of people with special needs and because it is a community of people who have historically been marginalized, making them more vulnerable to poverty, homelessness, underemployment, and lack of education. Furthermore, we are aware that people with disabilities may have special health issues and have challenges in obtaining healthcare. In this moment of crisis, this creates a very unique and perhaps dangerous situation for people with impairments.

The connection of the disability community and the current corona virus pandemic is examined in these two articles. They are written from quite distinct perspectives, with different analysis objectives. After you’ve finished reading:
1. Which article do you believe is more truthful from a disability-first perspective (that is, from the standpoint of a person with a disability)?
2. In terms of shocking, new, or unexpected information, what stuck out the most for you from either article:
3. In the event of a medical pandemic, what do you believe would be the most significant concern of leaders in terms of safeguarding and serving persons with disabilities? Do you believe this is the type of reaction that may be expected in the United States today, and if so, why or why not?
This post is similar to one of your Final Project options in this course: comparing and contrasting two current events to see how disability history informs the author’s perspective, how the article may be received by people with disabilities, and what, if any, lessons from the disability rights movement may be seen within the current event.
We shall all discover more about the corona virus as the story develops. But one thing is certain: persons with disabilities are in a unique position during the epidemic, and they ought to be taken into account in our leaders’ response.
I’m excited to hear your comments on the subject,
