Carroll’s satire is amplified in the last chapters of Alice. All of the concerns he discussed in previous chapters are brought to a head in this chapter.
The Queen of Hearts’ Court is a political satire on Queen Victoria. The trial of the Knave is a mockery of the legal system. The Dutchess reappears, this time as a child molestor rather than a child abuser. After all, Carroll began his career as a teacher. His view toward children’s education in England at the time is shown in the chapter with the Mock Turtle.
Throughout the novel, Alice tries to make sense of the chaos around her by putting her formal education and skills to use. That education has failed her terribly in every case. Alice in Wonderland is an Anti Didactic book in the sense that it educates youngsters not to learn from adults, as I mentioned in the previous section. When she meets the Turtle, they have a discussion about their respective educational experiences. “The different branches of Arithmetic Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision,” the Turtle affirms that Alice’s education is truly inadequate and explains what he studied in school: “the different branches of Arithmetic Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.” Adults who truly want their children to succeed would teach them these four things if they were honest with themselves and their children about what it means to be an adult.
As a result, Carroll is arguing (together with Sinclair) that Victorian education fails to provide pupils with the skills they require. Carroll believes that if parents truly intended to prepare children for the world, they should teach them what the turtle suggests. Explain how Adults are reflected by Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.
Also, pay attention to Alice’s sister at the very end of the novel. She has reached adulthood. What is her response to Alice’s dream? How does this section reflect Romantic ideals?
