Case Study: HSA 501 Motivating Employees
Assume you’ve been named Director of Health at the Kaluyu Memorial Hospital, a for-profit facility in Nairobi, Kenya. The hospital also serves as a referral center for serious accidents, chronic and communicable diseases, and an HIV/AIDS unit. As you get used to your new job, you notice that when staff approach their bosses, they invariably seem afraid. Some staff even rush to deliver files and leave your office.
As you go through your normal departmental visits, you see that there are conflicts between nurses and doctors, and that there is a perception that nurses do the majority of the work in patient care but get all the credit. You see that the employees are always looking forward to getting home at the end of their shifts. Some employees even return to work in the same unwashed clothing they wore the day before. Too many employees call in ill, and many of them make lame excuses for being late.
Employees and nurses also have the impression that they are in charge of other employees in comparable positions. Some employees are constantly quiet and never engage in meetings and conference calls. On breaks, you’ll observe that people with families tend to congregate and converse softly. The hospital’s new mothers must pump breast milk for their infants in the restrooms, and the refrigerators are inoperable. When you look at the hospital’s financial statements, you’ll notice that its spending are higher than the industry average, and it loses money year after year.

Write a four to six page (4-6) paper that includes the following:
Investigate the primary sources of demotivation in Kaluyu Memorial Hospital. Examine the potential impact of the highlighted issues on specific areas of service and business if the administration does not intervene. At least two (2) instances of the potential negative impact of the identified demotivational elements on the hospital should be included in your response.
Choose one of Maslow’s, Herzberg’s, or McClelland’s motivation models and explain why it applies to the Kaluyu Memorial Hospital case.
Formulate a communication system that will have the most impact on fixing the problem, and explain why your system will have a positive impact on employee behavior. Justify your answer.
