Instructions:
Characteristics for Each Century and Region
The purpose of the project is to demonstrate your understanding of course content and your ability to communicate that understanding clearly. The project also provides you space to reflect on and think about your own learning strengths and weaknesses in this class.
A. What Mastery You Have to Demonstrate:
This project asks you to demonstrate that you understand our course content. You will need to demonstrate that you understand each of the below eras/concepts:
1. Influences and major characteristics of 14th century art in Italy, identifying key examples.
2. Influences and major characteristics of 15th century art in Northern Europe, identifying key examples.
3. Influences and major characteristics of 15th century art in Italy, identifying key examples.
4. Influences and major characteristics of 16th century art in Northern Europe, identifying key examples.
5. Influences and major characteristics of 16th century art in Italy, identifying key examples.
B. How to Demonstrate This Knowledge:
You are tasked with writing an essay for each of the 5 bullet points you see above. Each essay will be two pages-double spaced (The font must be Times New Roman and 12 point size). Make sure your essays reach the bottom of the second page. If your essay is a page and half you will lose points. Two pages means to pages, not one and a half.
As you will notice above, the guidelines ask that you identify influence and major characteristics for each century and region (each bullet points), and that you discuss examples. What ill be grading for is that youve identified 3 characteristics for each century and region. Characteristics include ways in which we can separate 15th Century Italian art as different from 16th century Northern art. An example of a characteristic for 15th North would include symbolism.
After you identify a characteristic, you need to talk about how and where you see that characteristic occurring inside of a work of art. So if you use symbolism as an influence, discuss a painting with symbolism and where the symbolism is happening. So to reiterate, you are not finding one work of art that fits all three characteristics, you are picking a work of art for each characteristic you identify in each essay. So three examples in each essay.
The last thing you have to talk about in each essay is at least one influence . Influences are outside factors that affected the artists and their art, such as historical events or important people. For instance, for 16th North, Martin Luther would be an influence. In your essay you would talk about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation and how exactly it affected art. ARTISTS DO NOT COUNT AS INFLUENCES, as they were just as effected by the influence as their art.
C. How to Succeed on This Project:
1. There is NO reason to do ANY extra research. Use our readings and in-class activities as the basis for your project! Dont re-invent the wheel.
2. DO NOT PUT IMAGES IN YOUR ESSAYS.
