Civil War Essay Assignment for History 310
Based on the Unit II materials assigned during weeks 10-16 of the course, you will write and submit an original essay (approximately 1,500 words). The following prompt will serve as the basis for your essay:
Our Unit III theme has been “A Nation and its Discontents,” and you saw how those discontents led to the most destructive era in American history when you studied the Civil War in Week 16. So, why is there a civil war? Was it unavoidable, and if so, what was the reason? Why did the country not avoid it if it could have been avoided? Find links between “big picture” topics like slavery, politics, economics, and geography, and the intricacies of individual events and personalities from the antebellum period as you write this essay.
Remember to read the detailed instructions for this essay in our Week 16 module, as well as the final essay scoring rubric, which is also available there. Students wishing to receive full credit should expect to demonstrate knowledge of ALL assigned sources, including the OpenStax textbook, Master of the Mountain, and other assigned readings.
