Instruction for Journal 3: My study design—
Journal 3 is a continuation from journal 1&2. You now have a research question and a
hypothesis. The next step is to think of a way to test your hypothesis.
You must use the following 5 headings for this particular journal.
I. [My question & hypothesis] Copy from journal 2-IV.
Please copy (from journal 2-IV) your cause-effect research question and hypothesis
(with rationale) here. If you want to change them to a different set of cause-effect research
question and hypothesis, that would be fine. Just make sure the scopes (as in journal 2-II&III)
are manageable.
II. [The range of cause] Give an estimate or look it up.
First tell me what the [cause] you want to focus on is. Then, tell me the range of
variation you think this [cause] could have in the environment (e.g., American River area).
Example A, the river water temperature (as a cause) ranges between 5 to 20 °C. Example B,
the boat engine noise (as a cause) ranges between 0-110 dB with the microphone 1.5 m away.
This section will help you set up your treatment groups. For example, if you are investigating
the effects of water temperature, then you can set up 2 (5 vs. 20 °C) or more (5 vs. 10 vs. 15
vs. 20 °C) treatments. Finally, tell me where you found the information, e.g., website, research
articles.
III. [Location & treatment]
First, tell me where you will perform this study. Is it in the field or laboratory? Second,
tell me why you chose to do in the field (or laboratory). Third, tell me how many treatment
groups you will set up. Example A, set up 2 groups: low temperature (5 °C) vs. high (20 °C)
temperature. Example B, set up 3 noise levels: no noise vs. intermediate noise vs. high noise.
IV. [Sample sizes & Sampling methods]
First, tell me how you will obtain/establish samples. Second, tell me how many samples
you want to have per treatment group. Talk about how you will achieve random sampling.
Example A, in the laboratory, I will set up 60 tanks, and randomly assign them to either 5-°C or
20-°C treatment by the flip of a coin. Example B, in the field site, I will find 30 pikeminnow
populations, and randomly assigned each to one of the 3 treatment groups by rolling a dice.
Finally, tell me a little bit about how you will set it up, and the equipment & instrument you may
need.
V. [Control variables] (Note that control variable ≠ control treatment)
First, name one of the important factors that might confound your finding. Example A, in
the laboratory, I will maintain similar lighting condition. Example B, in the field, each fish
population will hear the same noise, only the volumes are different. Second, explain in detail
how that factor may confound your finding, thus need to be controlled.
