Community-Based Interventions and The Role of Community Psychologists
Week 3 Study Notes The focus this week is to explore the role of community psychologists as agents of social change and to introduce the tools of action in community psychology. Nelson &
Prilleltensky (2010), in Chapters 7 & 8 , provide an overview of tools for social change and examine community psychologists as agents of change. Consider the distinctions between ameliorative
and transformative interventions(Table 7.2; Nelson & Prilleltensky, 2010) and the implications of these distinctions for the practice of community psychology. Review Nelson & Prilleltensky’s (2010)
depiction of the cycle of praxis (Figure 7.1 & Table 7.4). Consider the implications of this cycle for your role as a community psychologist: How can you insure that you engage in reflexive practice as
you attempt to facilitate liberation and well-being of individuals, groups, and communities?
