Description
Part one: Compare and contrast the Hadza culture with The Mosuo Culture (4 pages)
How do these cultures accomplish similar goals using different means (for instance, in our culture marriage serves a variety of functions [economic, child-rearing, emotional, physical, etc.]. Yet the Na [a southwestern Chinese ethnic group] do not practice marriage. How do they accomplish the same goals?)? How do the various cultural subsystems interact to accomplish various goals (for instance, how might politics or religion impact certain practices? How do different kinship systems impact economic or other needs?)?
Cover each of the six cultural subsystems-
1. Subsistence (how are resources collected?);
2. Economics (how are resources redistributed?);
3. Political organization/social stratification/class systems (is there a power differential? Who has what rights, and who are denied other rights? What categories are created to maintain power differentials);
4. Social organization/Kinship systems/Ethnic identities (how are kin/family groups created, conceived, and categorized? What categories other categories of difference and of identity does this society create?);
5. Sex (beliefs about reproduction/sexed bodies), Gender (cultural categories and norms/meanings associated with these categories), and Sexuality (what beliefs and practices surround sexuality in this society?); and
6. Religion (describe beliefs and practices)
(Part two: 1-2pages) What personal assumptions/baggage/bias made it difficult for you to understand certain cultural beliefs and practices of 1) the Hadza culture assigned and 2) The Mosuo Culture
