Instead of perceiving a career as something you stumble across, consider it something you select. You can’t seem to find the right job. You are the one who makes it…. There is a significant distinction between these two approaches. Thinking that there is just one “proper” job path might cause anxiety: “Did I pick the right one?” What if I make a blunder?
It’s easier to relax if you think of your job as a creation. You don’t have to be concerned about finding the “correct” job. Choose a career today, knowing that you will be able to change your mind later.
From Master Student to Master Employee, David Ellis
You’ll do a professional self-assessment today to assist you go deeper into your knowledge and exploration of your chosen field. Even if you’ve already declared a major and know what you want to do with your life, go through this procedure. This activity will either confirm your decision or encourage you to look into other possibilities.
You identified your personal values and interests in Week 1. Consider how your personal values can influence your future professional path and research on career planning.
1st part
You will complete a career self-assessment and examine the university’s student career planning services (CareerQuest, Vault, Steppingblocks, and Candid Career). Let’s take a look at some of the characteristics that each career planning resource tool has to offer.
Current students and graduates have easy access to career-related help and resources through Career Services. Whether you’re a recent college graduate looking for your first job or a seasoned executive trying to advance your career, the Career Services website offers professional development tools for people at all stages of their careers.
CareerQuest is the university’s online portal for connecting with the Career Services department. As a student, you can use this platform to find and apply for internships and jobs, browse resources and online tools, register for events such as virtual and in-person recruiter sessions, online webinars, and career fairs, use Community Connect to connect with mentors who can offer career-related advice, and set up an in-person interview.
Vault is a website that gives in-depth information on jobs, companies, and industries to assist job seekers in learning about and launching their desired careers. Vault publishes a powerful list of rankings, ratings, and reviews on thousands of companies, jobs, and internships every year.
Steppingblocks is a data-driven career exploration tool that allows you to delve into over 60 million personal career journeys to discover the skills and education required to land a job.

You will accomplish the following tasks in this section of the activity:

Activate your account on the CareerQuest website.
Fill out the Career Assessment on Steppingblocks.
Your Custom Personality Report is available for download and study (which you will have access to after you complete the Steppingblocks Career Assessment).
Part two
Utilize your assessment results to help determine two prospective professional career routes you might be interested in pursuing, based on your current academic program and current career aspirations, now that you’ve finished the career self-evaluation. You will now be able to use one or more of the research tools listed below, depending on whether you are exploring your first professional career, changing careers, or simply interested in advancing your existing career.
Complete the following tasks in this activity:
Select Career Research from the Tools menu on the CareerQuest website.
Review the Vault Demo video and go to the Vault website if you’re a first-time professional; or go to the Steppingblocks Demo video and go to the Steppingblocks website if you’re a career changer or want to enhance your career.
CandidCareer is a great place to look for business jobs (all).
Consider your job alternatives in light of the personal motivations, values, and interests you identified in Week 1. Answer each of the following questions:
Make a list of the prerequisites and job skills required for success. What abilities do you still require? How did you manage to get them?
Make a list of the first steps that will lead to your long-term objectives. What kind of job titles do you think you’ll be looking for after graduation? Are there any special credentials or qualifications that you’ll require at that time? If that’s the case, what are they and how are you going to get them?
