Interview Questions: Understanding the Other
Create interview questions and decide who you will be interviewing. For your interview you will prepare a list of questions during Week 3. The interview should last approximately one hour. Here are some additional factors to consider prior to the interview:
- Explain the purpose of your interview to the person you will be interviewing.
- Review what we have already learned in this class and what you have read in your text. This will help you create your questions.
- Use general, open-ended questions that do not suggest a particular answer. This might start with phrases: tell me about, describe to me, explain…etc.
- Ask questions to clarify areas you want to know more about. Examples would be: “Could you tell me more….”, “What happened then?”, “Could you elaborate on that, please?”
- Create a climate for communication.
- Relax and enjoy your interview/discussion. Allow it to feel like a conversation; however, it will have more structure than a random meeting because you have planned out your specific questions.
