Description
The George Floyd case highlighted the need for criminal justice reform in the United States, but criminal justice experts have been discussing many such changes for decades.
What reforms would make policing and the criminal justice system fairer for all Americans, including those that are economically disadvantaged and/or faced systemic racism in the past.
Hint: Literally, dozens of reforms have been proposed; you may need to focus on just 5 or 6 and drill down into the research on each to determine what changes would work best to make policing and the criminal justice system more fair, more humane.
One way to approach the research on this subject is to find studies on the results of changes made by states or cities [or even other nations] to gauge how well they have worked.
Some guidelines:
Each paper should include a specific thesis statement.
Thesis Statements: A thesis statement is the single, specific claim that your essay supports.
A strong thesis answers the question you want to raise; it does so by presenting a topic, your reasoned opinion on the topic, and a blueprint that sketches out the organization for the paper. It is not merely an observation or an opinion.
A good thesis statement is clear and concise and will include the following attributes:
1. takes on a subject upon which reasonable people could disagree.
2. is provable based on objective evidence.
3. asserts your conclusions based on the evidence
The Term Paper: Your term paper will be due on the day of the final. In your introductory paragraph you will put forward a thesis which you will support in your paper. You wont be graded on your views, but rather how well you support your thesis. Each paper should be approx. 12-14 pages in length, double spaced.
All sources should be cited using footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references. You must also include a Bibliography at the end of your paper which should include all sources you used. You should consult a minimum of 8 sources. There are a variety of standard citation formats, and they are all acceptable for use in my courses.
The most important thing is to make sure that you (a) provide all relevant bibliographic information so a reader can find the source easily; and (b) use a consistent format throughout your paper. The best source for answering questions about citation formats is The Chicago Manual of Style.
In writing your paper an intelligible and logical structure is needed to convey information and arguments coherently and persuasively. Your thesis sentence determines what you are required to say in a paper. It also determines what you cannot say. Every paragraph in your paper exists to support your thesis.
Any well-prepared research paper has three essential sections.
1. INRODUCTION: What topic will your paper address? Why is the topic worthy of investigation? What questions, related to that issue, will the paper seek to answer? What is the answer at which you arrive? (The answer to this last question will be your thesis the argument that will organize and drive your paper.)
2 BODY: Each paragraph will directly relate to and help demonstrate your thesis. Use the thesis to keep your paper focused and structured.
3. CONCLUSION: Discuss your analysis. This should be more than just a this is what I said above section. It should note your conclusions and discuss their implications.
Your grade on this assignment will consist of two parts: How well you have supported your argument and conclusions with scholarly research, and how well you convey the information [grammar, style]
