Data Discussion Paper Types
Cohen and Spenciner (2009) report that educators watch conduct of students through a multitude of educational situations. For this reason, it is crucial for educators to define behavior in observable terms so that every observer has same definitions of the behavior recorded in the data collection instrument (p. 249). Data tells history. Story tells data. There are several methods of data collection designed for problematic behaviour. These data collecting tools (Links to an external site.) and examples of data collection forms typically used in the practice of special training should be reviewed in around 15 minutes.
Another technique to collect data is to build an ABC analysis while focusing on its function. The IRIS Center (Links to an external website) is a website which outlines how an A-B-C analysis can guide observation and establish unity across the entire educational environment. (In Week 4 we will refer to this form of data collection again.)
Review teacher guidelines, the website of the IRIS Center, recommended films and text resources to inform your participation in this discussion.
For this debate:
First, identify the handicap that you focus on (intellectual disability).
Then define your operating behavior (use the five components outlined in the
Download A-B-C Analysis Form).
Synthesize at least 3 data collection instruments (p. 250-251) to report behavior findings.
