Deleuze’s Film Illustrations and Discussion of Various Historical Periods
The prompt is as follows: I’ve attached the readings, lecture notes, and class recordings that will assist you in answering this prompt 🙂
Prompt: As we near the end of our study of twentieth-century film theory, what aspects of it do you find most fascinating and/or useful? Consider individual theorists or groups of theorists who are linked by aesthetic concerns, political
concerns, or historical circumstances. While your response should include specific references to theorists and their work, this essay is a personal reflection on our module’s work.
Please use all of the feedback that I have given you in the past 500-word essay questions that I need help with, as well as the following notes from a classmate: Delleuze’s ideas about the relationship between time and space raise an important topic that I had not given much thought to before. Time is made up of images that have been montaged together and represents an indirect flow of time that the filmmaker can create at their leisure using images that do not have to be
correlated with one another. These are indeed false continuities of movement that our brains perceive as normal images appearing one after the other. I’m curious as to why our minds find this so easy to comprehend.
Manovich’s concept of the super-genre makes a lot of sense, as it makes this a universal genre for all fictional films. The distinction he draws between celluloid film and digital is startling and startlingly accurate. The computer program sees all
digitalized images as just pixels, and he claims that this footage loses its privileged indexical relationship to profilmic reality. I’m not sure I agree with this statement because, even though everything is now in digital format, some of these
sections, footage, and images are still used as indexical in the media. Although not everything is reconstructed in Premiere Pro or After Effects, I understand why the images are more difficult to trust in this digital age. On the other hand, I like how these modern times have become a materialized avant-garde thanks to the computer’s power. So, are the majority of contemporary films made in studios and using computers avant-garde films? In the world we live in now, what would
make that clear distinction?
As the prompt indicates, this is the final essay, and it is personal. I hope you disregard all of the feedback I have received for my previous responses in order to write this final essay “What aspects of it pique your interest and/or appear to be the
most useful to you? Consider individual theorists or groups of theorists who are linked by aesthetic concerns, political concerns, or historical circumstances. While your response should include specific references to theorists and their work, this essay is a personal reflection on our module’s work.” If you want to use those theorists, you can go back to the previous readings for the previous 500 word film essay questions I’ve posted before. I hope you write this essay well. To assist
you, I have attached the class recording links for this week as well as the material.
