Different Beliefs of Thomas Jefferson
1.) Thomas Jefferson the President of the United States at times held very different beliefs than Jefferson the Virginia statesmen or Jefferson the Secretary of State. In your opinion (based on evidence and analysis), was Jefferson a hypocrite in terms of his beliefs, or was he a pragmatist dealing with the hands that he was dealt as president?
2.) please respond to two student posts below
——————————-
Based on evidence and analysis Jefferson was a hypocrite in terms of his beliefs because as he preaches several of his actions betrayed his words. He displays contradictions in his positions toward slavery, the Louisiana purchase, and national debt. These contradictions define Jefferson truly was a hypocrite. Also, he wanted slavery abolished but owned hundreds in addition he believed strongly in the constitution but his actions show different, he contradicted himself a lot.
——————————
Great topic, when Jefferson was a statesman, he was very much an advocate for those who considered the “little guy” he essentially spoke up for those who couldn’t do so at the time. During his time as a statesmen Jefferson believed that each individual had his own rights with or without the government and no man could take these away from them as it is their god given right. He also decided to essentially ban the death penalty (as he should considering he was a prolific lawyer) except for in the case they were convicted of murder and crimes alike. At one time Jefferson mentioned that people have a right to bare arms and protect themselves at any cost.
Now here’s the tricky part. Jefferson as a President in his past owned over 600 slaves, and also during his presidency started to throw the Indian people out of their own land, however as a statesman, he stated that it was their god given right and it shouldn’t be taken away from them. However, he was getting rid of the Indian people as a point to take their land? a bit contradictory doesn’t you think? If it is indeed true then why would it be wrong for the Indians to defend their land? It was given to them, and maybe their ancestors gave it to them so that was their heritage being taken away from them. In my opinion Jefferson stated these things in order to gain a foothold and a leg up, as most politicians do, ultimately, he was indeed a good president as well as understanding but it just goes to show that at the current time if you said the right thing it might get you into office.
