Discussion on Economic Efficiency and Markets
Local Government as a Unit
Here are some further details:
18-point PowerPoint presentation: You’ll need to make a PowerPoint presentation about your assigned special district that’s between 5 and 10 slides long, plus one more slide for your works referenced. You will earn a ten-point loss from your presentation grade if you opt to do your presentation on a special district other than the one assigned to you.
You must conduct research on your allocated special district in order to inform us of the following: What special district is this presentation about?
What year was the special district established, and how did the vote turn out (percentage of the electorate who voted, etc.)?
What is the special district’s governing board (including if it is an elected board, the length of board member tenure, board member compensation, and so on)?
Is the governing board meeting on a regular basis? Fill in the blanks with information.
What kind of taxes does the special district levy on its residents?
What are the special district’s annual expenses?
What is the special district’s purpose?
Have there been any recent controversies in this special district that you think your peers would be interested in learning about?
What is your PERSONAL view of a special district like this?
Note: Your presentation will be scored on how well you answered the following questions and how well you presented the information. Please ensure that your color scheme is easy to see, that your essential points are highlighted, and that you keep your audience (your students) engaged. To engage your audience, use visuals, videos, and graphs. By Wednesday at 11:59 p.m., you must have your presentation uploaded to Canvas. When the discussion board opens up for you, you can upload your presentations as a PowerPoint or PDF file as an attachment. Presentations made after the deadline will not be accepted.
2 points for works cited: You must use Chicago Manual Style to mention the sources you used on the last slide of your PowerPoint presentation (CMS). Your sources must be academic in nature. Wiki pages and blogs are not permitted. You may use your textbook as one of your two required sources, but you must also use outside sources.
5 points for comments: The remaining 5 points will come from your comments on other students’ presentations. You must see at least 5 presentations and respond to your peers’ questions or remarks. Each presentation you comment on is worth one point, up to a maximum of five points, although you are free to go over all of them. Please be constructive and helpful to other students in your remarks. Your feedback could be regarding the material offered or how the information is presented, such as color schemes or animations, or anything else you liked or thought could be better. Please be respectful and considerate in your remarks. Comments that violate netiquette standards will not receive points and may be reported to the Dean of Students.
