Introduction
Kate Chopin tells the story of an abandoned lady who is taken in by an older couple, reared as their own, married to a man of great fortune, bears a child, and then is thrown away again – this time with a child.
Desiree, who has been abandoned twice, finds comfort in Madame Valmonde both times. Madame Valmonde demonstrates unwavering devotion for Desiree as a kid and as an adult to her own child. Armand is the one who is harsh and callous, kicking Desiree out because their child has multi-racial characteristics.
There are some concerns concerning Kate Chopin’s use of race as a symbol in “Desiree’s Baby.”
Instructions for the First Post
How does Chopin’s appraisal of the fragility of love and understanding between men and women reflect his attitude to race? (Consider the emotions of both Armand and Madame Valmonde.)
Is Chopin using Desiree’s multi-racial looks to disclose a secret Armand really wants to keep hidden, or do we just assume she’s multi-racial since she was abandoned as a child?

Introduction
In Greek tragedies, there was always a chorus that represented the populace of a particular city, a group of warriors, a group of servants – a large group of individuals with a connection to the event at hand. This group of individuals was frequently of a similar mindset or asked each other questions. The chorus frequently addressed the audience directly, warning them of impending doom and judging the injustice occurring around them.
Instructions for the First Post
Examine how much in “Sweat” Zora Neale Hurston uses “the guys” from town as a Greek chorus. Are they achieving the aforementioned objectives, or are they also serving another purpose?
There is an unusual collection of violence throughout the story. How much do you think Delia was to blame for Syke’s death? Do you think she’s a murderer?
