Discussion on Parenting Older Children
You are a single working parent with two children, a 16-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. On weekends, your son has an 11 p.m. curfew, but he has recently been breaking it and returning home after midnight. When you try to talk to him about it, he either ignores you or becomes enraged and begins yelling at you. When he’s at home, he prefers to be alone in his room. His most recent report card reveals that his grades are deteriorating. You’re worried, but you’re also frustrated since you work full-time and raise your children alone.
Your daughter, on the other hand, has been complaining that she isn’t feeling well and doesn’t want to go to school. She finally admitted to being taunted at school and bullied online after some probing.
Prepare a strategy for dealing with your children based on the literature on adolescent discipline after examining the learning resources for this week. What are some of the things you should think about?
What steps would you take to try to address the negative behaviors you’ve noticed?
What behaviors would you stay away from?
An outstanding response to this debate will be well-written and at least 2-3 paragraphs long, with at least three of the learning resources included. Other resources found outside of the classroom may also be included. To indicate the concepts you learnt from your sources, use in-text citations and a reference list. Any concept you got from something you read has to be referenced. Cite it if you’re unsure!
