Discussion
Discuss the contraceptive methods that Karen might be medically eligible for using the most up-to-date evidence-based guidelines.
Women with pre-existing medical issues should avoid hormonal contraception, according to evidence-based guidelines published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) in 2019. Karen, on the other hand, is medically eligible for a variety of contraception options other than condoms. The first alternative is to use a coil, which is a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD). The diaphragm, which is a cup-like device put into the vaginal canal to prevent sperm from passing through the cervix and into the womb, is the second option. The calendar approach is a third option, in which the patient determines their safe days and avoids sex during ovulation (ACOG, 2019).
Choose one option that you believe would be the most useful to Karen and explain why you chose it.
Karen finds the IUD to be the most useful of all the contraceptive techniques listed here. To begin with, the American Cancer Society (2020) claims that using an IUD lowers the risk of cervical cancer; this is significant for Karen because she has a family history of the disease. Second, the IUD is non-hormonal, which is advantageous for Karen, who has a history of DVT and cardiac illness. Finally, in the scenario of Karen does not want to get pregnant right away, IUDs can last up to 10 years.
Do you have any techniques that you would not recommend for Karen? Why?
Karen is not advised to use some types of contraception. Combination injectables such as depo provera, hormonal implants, and combined patch/vaginal rings containing hormones such as estrogen are examples (ACOG, 2019). This is because the use of such contraceptives increases the risk of thrombus formation or venous thrombus in women with a history of DVT and heart sickness.
