Documents to Develop and Appropriate Theme Assignment
Paper 1: Essay length: 7-10 pages.
Minimum citations: 10 (from at least three different sources).
Topic Prompt:
Choose one topic covered in class. Write an essay on the theme (or one of the themes if we covered multiple topics) for that class, addressing the film shown and, if you wish other films.
–Read at least two other essays/excerpts from the reader—this is a great option if you want to explore a theme further (ideology, race, apparatus, gender)
OR
–explore one author’s writings in more depth by going one of the source the excerpt was drawn from and reading more (minimum 15 pages) or reading the entirety of the essay from which the excerpt was drawn (for example: read all of Benjamin’s “Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproducibility” or go to Kracauer’s From Caligari to Hitler).
If you choose the latter single-author option, feel free to explore Wikipedia or other sites to contextualize the author’s work. Just remember you need to satisfy the citation requirements with material from lecture and readings, other sources are icing on the cake. Don’t get too distracted with life stories and context, as this essay is tasking you to engage the theory, not the person.

Internet animation: After broadcast, after narrative How do new technologies offer new opportunities—and limits—for animation? What are the defining aspects of animated Internet humor, and how do current events dictate those? In what ways do these animations help globalize certain constructions of animation and of humor? Or, what is a meme anyway? Select an internet animation (don’t forget to provide the url!) and consider some of these questions of an argumentative, 5-page essay, including a title and a concrete thesis statement. Double-space, using 1’’ margins and a 12-pt. font. This is not a research essay.
However, if you use outside sources it is necessary to cite those sources correctly, following a style guide such as the MLA Handbook. As I write on the syllabus, whenever students take an idea or a passage from another author, they must acknowledge their debt both by using quotation marks where appropriate and by proper referencing with footnotes or citations.
