Instructions:
After you’ve finished reading Lesson Three, go to the following link and watch Sam Harris’s TED Talk, Science Can Answer Moral Questions:
Please write an essay in response to the following questions.
1. As Americans, we value freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and freedom of association. However, we occasionally face ethical dilemmas when individuals or groups seeking to spread ideas that the majority would consider nefarious demand status and privileges normally reserved for more widely accepted viewpoints. Take a look at this article about the ramifications of 501(c)(3) tax status for racist, white-nationalist propaganda groups. Consider both sides of this public debate’s arguments. On the one hand, there’s the argument that all Americans (and organizations) should have equal rights, regardless of their political beliefs (remember Evelyn Beatrice Hall’s famous quote: “I don’t agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend your right to say it to the death”). On the other hand, there are arguments that government tax incentives should not be used to subsidize hate groups, and that the organizations in question are unworthy of non-profit status because they operate in a deceptive manner (using misleadingly benign names) and are not truly “educating” as the law intended. What are your thoughts on the subject? Is it possible that the IRS made a mistake in these cases? What rights do such organizations have? What statuses would you bestow on such groups, if any at all?
2. Assume that someone accuses you of bias after reading your answers to the first part of this assignment. Another reader claims that your response is “just your opinion,” and that nothing distinguishes your viewpoint from anyone else’s. Make a case for your position. How would you respond to such accusations? What distinguishes your response from mere opinion?
Instructions for Submission:
At the very least, this assignment should have 2,000 words of content (double spaced). I’m looking for 2,000 words of substance, not including headings, cover pages, references, or question text (if you choose to include it in your paper). Your paper should be formatted in APA style, with a properly formatted cover page (abstracts are optional) and at least three (3) new references on the reference page (“new” here means references that you have not already used in previous assignments in this course). Adding more references to your assignments shows that you want to learn more about the subject and can help you improve your research skills.
Include properly formatted in-text citations for each of your listed references in the body of your work for all assignments so that the reader can determine your original thoughts or ideas as well as the portion of your work that is credited to credible sources. To ensure that proper credit is given to researchers in the field, it is critical to identify work from other sources. Turn It In is used to verify the originality of this assignment.
As an MS Word attachment, submit the weekly written assignment (.doc or .docx format). The font 12pt Times New Roman is recommended. DO NOT submit discussion board responses with your formal written assignment.
This assignment’s rubric can be found in the Resources section.
