Ethical Issues That Surround Conducting Research Assignment
Please watch the following video and share your thoughts on it. Yes, it can be difficult to watch, but this documentary shows why is it of the extreme importance that IRBs exist. They make sure that Human Subjects are safe and their rights are protected. In addition to the ethical issues that surround conducting research where the subjects are unaware of their participation in the study and are subjugated to stressful scenarios that can contribute to adverse mental health conditions.

After watching this video, it was shocking to me that research studies like these were actually accepted by the public and that the researchers had no ethical quarrels within them about their practices. These participants were paid to participate in this study, but weren’t given any specifics as to what they would be doing until they got to the research location.
More than anything, the researcher never got their consent as they weren’t honest with the participants as to what would be happening to them during the study. This is blatant torture that the researcher was trying to justify as “science.” Eventually, in the video they start referring to the “student participant” as the “victim,” because that’s exactly what they were; victims to an immoral researcher with poor ethics.
The participants that were being electrocuted had to sit and endure the increased voltage as the test continued, but the “teacher participants” were the ones with the real emotional damage. Psychologically, they were being pushed to willingly electrocute an individual, who was screaming, yelling, and/or kicking to be let out of the experiment. Every time the “teacher participant” would refuse to continue and demanded that the study stop and for their partner to be let out and allowed to leave.
There is an increased emotional damage here for those participants as they were being forced to perform immoral acts against another human being. This is why the IRB is so incredibly important because it forces researchers to have a sense of morality and ethics for individuals, who are not and never will be robotic objects.

After watching the documentary, i just did some additional research to it because i was curious about it. It was fairly shocking to me that people were willing to give the maximum shock to the “students” just because they’re were being told they had to do it.
But then again i also considered that some of those people performing/participating in the experiment must have been somewhat curious about it and probably did not question much about it because they assumed that since someone of such high position was performing the experiment, that it wasn’t dangerous and harmful to the “students”.
And to me it kind of sounds almost immoral to shock someone who is responding with such high voltage when they’re asking for it to be stopped, like for me i don’t think i could do it even if i was being paid to do it or told to do it unless they like threatened to kill me or something of that sort. I just wanna know what was going on inside their heads while performing these acts.
