Feminism and the Civil Rights Movement: Intersectional activism
Feminism and the Civil Rights Movement were two separate social and political movements that emerged in the 20th century. However, both movements shared many of the same goals and were ultimately linked by a shared commitment to social justice and equality.
Intersectional activism, which is the idea that different forms of oppression are interconnected and that individuals may face multiple forms of oppression simultaneously, became a central part of both movements. Black women, in particular, played a significant role in both movements and often faced unique challenges because of their race and gender.
During the Civil Rights Movement, Black women like Ella Baker, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Daisy Bates played a critical role in organizing and advocating for civil rights. They faced both racial and gender discrimination, as they were often excluded from leadership positions and faced sexist attitudes within the movement. However, they persisted and fought for the rights of Black people, while also advocating for women’s rights.
Similarly, during the feminist movement, Black women like Angela Davis, bell hooks, and Audre Lorde were instrumental in shaping feminist theory and activism. They advocated for a more intersectional approach to feminism that recognized the unique challenges faced by women of color, queer and trans women, and women from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
The link between feminism and the Civil Rights Movement was exemplified by the formation of the National Black Feminist Organization in 1973. This organization sought to bridge the gap between the two movements and advocated for a more inclusive and intersectional approach to social justice.
Overall, intersectional activism was a critical component of both the Civil Rights Movement and feminism. Both movements recognized that different forms of oppression were interconnected and that social justice required a more comprehensive approach. Black women played a critical role in both movements and helped to shape the intersectional approach that is now a hallmark of modern social justice activism.
