Final Project on Social Inequality
20 points for the assignment
You will write a 4-page reflection on your perspectives on the Commute of Power and Oppression for your final project, identifying methods to use your privilege, speak back to power when oppressed, and what to do with your middle ground positions.
For roughly a paragraph, describe intersectionality and its relevance to the Commute of Power and Oppression. Then, describe how you went about identifying your position on each train, paying special attention to which trains were easy to identify and which were hard, and why. Write about how the activity made you feel, what you learnt, and which train tracks astonished you the most. The remainder of page 1 should be devoted to this.
Next, locate the railway lines where you have a position near the top and explain (using course materials or further study) what this means about your power and privilege. Write about whether you were conscious of this privilege before this exercise and how you used it, or about your lack of awareness and how you aim to use your power and privilege for good in the future. Page 2 should be devoted to this.
Finally, locate the train tracks where you occupy a lower-level position, as well as any middle-ground positions.
Explain how the activity represents your personal experience with prejudice and oppression, and how you may utilize that experience to oppose and resist injustice (using course materials or further research).
In terms of your middle ground positions, consider what it means in terms of how you want to think about them.
How do you want to assist those who are below you, and how do you want to deal with those who are above you? Finish with any finishing reflections. Pages 34 should be devoted to this.
