Folk Music Presentation Music and Society Presentation
Does music reflect society or is music a reaction to what is happening in society at the time?
Students will provide an informative, 8-10-minute, presentation on an assigned music genera and decades/generations and the effect of music and message on society. Does the music reflect what is/was occurring in society, and what are the effects on culture at the time?
The Topic: In class we have been talking about the evolution of radio as a means of communication and entertainment. We touch on the radio and how it was originally a means of communication and served as a source of news as well as entertainment. We also looked at how this invention changed news reporting, communications (the power of imagination vs. the lack of power with only having sound and no sight/visual), people’s outlooks on topics, reactions, past times, etc.
In addition, we also took a look at the music industry and how the recording industry has changed and evolved over time as new technologies (specifically the Internet) have developed. As we discussed each of these topics, we also took a look at “society” and what makes up culture, such as fashion, language, music, people’s ideals and vision, viewpoints, past times, traditions, values, etc., and how these topics were reflecting and shaping society throughout various periods of U.S. history (therefore, YES, you will have to research what was happening in history and the environment during the time of your genre/musician).
The Assignment: For this project you were assigned a specific time period and category of music want you to take an in-depth look at how this musical genus (FOLK MUSIC) reflected or reacted to society.
Was this genus created as a reaction to an event or situation or did this genus reflect society at the time?
What messages were generated through this type of music? Did it have a cause or a mission? Was there a reason this message was ignited?
Was there an overlying theme behind this music?
What was going on in history at that time? What happened just before this musical movement started?
What were the implications/effects of this genera? Show evidence such as photos to prove your point.
How did music change society and culture?
Identify important artists of the time. How did they get their start and why? How did they start a movement? Identify major stylistic traits.
Discuss the role, value, and function of music in society.
