respond to the following discussion post as a peer making a comment. Interdepartmental collaboration can be described as when people with specific expertise work together to complete a project or achieve a common goal.
These teams benefit from their diversity of viewpoints and the potential for innovative, high-quality solutions. However, collaborative interdepartmental teams also suffer from challenges that include: interpersonal conflicts, team
member mistrust, competing for individual priorities, and obstructive turf concerns. To become successful, these teams must acquire the following skills to achieve success and to optimize team performance: 1) Excellent
Communication 2) Thorough Organization 3) Clarity 4) Mutual Understanding, and 5) Conflict Resolution. Additionally, teams should consider alternative group models such as single department teams, two-person partnerships,
and small workgroups. Each of these group models has strengths and weaknesses relative to collaborative interdepartmental teams and may be more efficient in some scenarios. Finally, when working in collaborative
interdepartmental teams, four key factors should be optimized to improve team performance: the right goal, the right culture, the right leadership, and the right people (Loving, 2021). GCU Interdepartmental Collaboration Discussion Paper
In my current skill set, I believe that the main way to grow as a professional is to find ways to improve your skills and applicable knowledge. This can be done by seeking out new responsibilities and experiences. Additionally, I
believe that the key to career growth is being open to making mistakes and learning from them. For example, I believe that I can continue to better prepare myself for these challenges if I continue to have a strong leader/mentor
and by receiving continuous feedback from them. Having a mentor can give you the advice and support you need to reach the next level of your career. They can also help answer some of your most pressing questions about your
career. Additionally, asking your employer or manager for feedback is an excellent way to grow in your career. Hearing constructive criticism is an important part of learning what areas you need to improve. Even getting positive
feedback is beneficial, as it boosts your self-confidence and helps you realize what your strengths are. Some things that I can stop doing are adding additional responsibilities to my tasks. This should only be done when I am
ready for the next step in my career and I am are wanting to push boundaries. Lastly, I can start attending networking and social events to get the chance to get to know my coworkers and employer better. Building a sense of
camaraderie and having a positive attitude can help me improve my team’s collaboration skills (Indeed, 2021). GCU Interdepartmental Collaboration Discussion Paper
