respond to the following discussion post as a peer making a comment. “Adaptive leaders have one unique advantage over all other leadership styles: they can adjust their approach to leadership based on the situation they face. Instead of forcing one type of leadership in all situations, an adaptive leader can evaluate their circumstances and adjust their approach whenever it is necessary. Additionally, some of the strengths and advantages an adaptive leader acquires are:
1) It is a leadership style that can be practiced by anyone.
2) It allows for a deeper level of leadership to be practiced.
3) Thinking outside of the box is a regular event.
4) Adaptive leaders expect change to happen.
5) It places people into positions where they can use their strengths.
6) Adaptive leaders focus on diversity.
7) Adaptive leaders have a high level of emotional intelligence.
8) It is a leadership style that focuses on the moment.
However, there are some weaknesses and disadvantages of adaptive leadership:
1) It may cause some workers to avoid their assignments.
2) It can require a shift in personal values.
3) Adaptive leaders sometimes break the rules when they feel like there is a need to make a change.
Leaders who apply adaptive leadership theory go beyond simply addressing challenges and finding ways to solve them. They also anticipate challenges and are able to identify their root causes. Furthermore, they are skilled at
recognizing what risks are worth taking and what to avoid wasting the organization’s time on. Adaptive leaders also encourage and motivate their followers to solve their own problems and challenges (Future of Working, 2018).
However, an adaptive leader may encounter challenges when encouraging their followers to solve their own challenges. Adaptive leaders in the workplace can encounter situations where there is a lack of clarity, communication,
and trust that end up causing problems with employees. For example, an adaptive leader allowed one of her employees to work from home for a couple of days to reduce stress and to focus on a rather difficult work-related
report. However, while working from home, the employee was not productive and did not do any work on the report. The leader then realized that some workers need to have a highly structured team environment to produce
results consistently. The adaptive leader then implemented a “no working from home” policy unless of illness or bad weather conditions until further notice.
