Instructions:
Write a research article of at least 1,000 words in which you discuss the sites and practices of Chinese history and memory. At least five scholarly journal articles should be used to provide concepts and information. Include some of the core cultural geography ideas addressed in your Unit 1 literature study in this project, as well as any Unit 2 assignment-related concept definitions, discussions, and relevant quotes in the Unit 1 Concept Review.
Begin by familiarizing yourself with the notions of historicity and collective memory, especially as they relate to the larger literature on cultural and national identity. Porter (2009), for example, examines the symbolic connotations of individual monuments and architectural iconography in relation to shifting political and cultural relations between Macau and China over multiple decades.
Changing urban political landscape removing old monuments, replacing with new ones; changing meanings of historical places (such as the Forbidden City and/or Tiananmen Square); demolition/re-purposing of neighborhoods; and performances with historical references (such as the op
Consider using common concepts and terms found in paper titles and abstracts, keywords, and subject terms to enhance your research: remembrance (architecture, landscapes, spaces, and practices of); remembering; monuments; monumentality; memoro-politics; memorabilia; created traditions; and forgetting. Article titles, abstracts, and texts may contain terms from the above list. Journals devoted to such study include History & Memory, Memory Studies, Memory, and Public Historian, however related articles occur in a wide range of social scientific and interdisciplinary periodicals. Add the terms China; Chinese; Taiwan* to your search to find articles on that region. You may need to limit your search results by language if you do so.
Pierre Nora, a French historian who specializes on places of collective memory like monuments, authored essential essays and books on the subject. The most frequently quoted work is about what he refers to as “les lieux de mémoire” “memory spaces.” His work belongs to the French school of “new history,” therefore it presupposes some knowledge of postmodern philosophy; some sections of the text may be difficult to comprehend. (In fact, many academics who cite his work have never read it.) Nora’s work and linked materials may be beneficial for background on the concepts related to this project. In the most brief and accessible piece on the subject, I recommend struggling with Nora:
Between Memory and History: Les lieux de mémoire, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora, P. Nora
Pick three of the Unit 1 literature review List’s recommended themes to include in the paper.

Cartography of Geobodies (map-making, the power of visual representations of locations, boundaries, etc.)
Distinguishing between space and place is a difficult task.
Geographical cultural geography
The Chineseness of the Other (capital O)
