Description of the project
You will prepare a 1500-1750 word review of the scholarly literature on a topic of current interest in your discipline for your final assignment. To begin, pick a topic within your discipline that you’d like to learn more about. You can choose to choose a topic that is linked to the sources you already researched for your genre analysis paper to speed up your work. The next step is to locate authoritative sources within your discipline that discuss your issue. To identify your sources, use the same search strategies you’ve been honing throughout the semester. At least seven scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources should be discussed in total. Please keep in mind that book reviews, introductions, and journal editorials are not considered sources. You are free to use sources that you have already used for other course assignments as long as you are confident that they are highly respected within your discipline, as evidenced by citation indexes and other methods. In general, the sources you use should have been published within the last few years. You’re not debating the formal characteristics of a group of articles, nor are you delving into one in particular. In order to write your review, you’ll need to understand the scholarly conventions in your subject. You must also be able to evaluate a scholarly source. This time, instead of examining works individually, you’ll be doing so in groups.
A literature review is more than a summary of the scholarly literature on a particular subject. A literature review, on the other hand, is a synthesis. It connects disparate sources by highlighting their parallels and variations in terms of chronology, methodology, and subject content. It does not just list its sources; rather, it synthesizes and evaluates them, suggesting that the reader should view them from a certain perspective.
The start to your literature review should include a substantive, analytical thesis that introduces your issue. The thesis should advocate for a specific point of view on the materials you’ve looked at. Give your reader a road map for the article ahead by introducing the issue in broad terms, including your research question. From the start, it should be apparent why and to whom your chosen issue is significant.
Use your sources to examine and explore the topic in the body of your literature review. The following are the functions of a literature review:[1]
Finds inconsistencies, contradictions, and variations in the writers’ ideas, methodology, and evidence.
Identifies research gaps in order to provide a viable direction for your own conclusions/recommendations/research suggestions;
Demonstrates the connections between your sources, allowing you to group them into categories.
As you study sources, provide your own critique.
Additional considerations to consider while you write include: Do the sources give one or multiple solutions? Is there a part of the field that isn’t covered? How well do the sources provide the content, and do they do it in a way that is consistent with the theory? Do they show a pattern in the field? Is there a raging debate? [2]
Paragraphs should be arranged by theme or subtopic rather than by specific sources. This implies that you should not simply summarize each source before moving on to the next. You should instead synthesize them. Your article could be arranged chronologically, methodologically, or thematically.
Finish your review with a conclusion that contains your so what? question. Your conclusion could also be a good opportunity to raise any remaining questions you have about the issue, as well as any recommendations you have for future research on the subject.
Citations and a references/bibliography page prepared according to the citation style used by your discipline should also be included in your literature evaluation.
