Study Methods for Human Behavior Assume you’re going to do research on a human behavior you’re interested in learning more about.
1. Describe the study method you’d employ to look into it. PLEASE NOTE: While you may utilize more than one or a combination of research methods to explore a topic of interest in the real world, for the purposes of this academic exercise, please choose ONE approach to discuss.
2. What brought you to this strategy in the first place? What makes you think it’d be a good fit for your hypothetical study?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this type of study?
Here’s an example of a studied human behavior: Say you’re curious about whether men or women approach each other first in social circumstances when they don’t know each other. You may have an opinion based on personal experience, but you want to prevent any potential bias toward your own experience and views, therefore you’re going to undertake a research study. To investigate this, you may use “naturalistic observation,” which is going into nightclubs and seeing what men and women are doing. Another form of research would be to conduct a survey to observe how men and women respond to the topic of whether or not they approach each other. Each strategy has advantages and disadvantages.
