To have a better understanding of which leadership styles and approaches encourage innovation and creativity, the concept of innovation must first be clear. Innovation is the process of transforming a unique idea into a product or service that
creates value for customers. In business, innovation occurs when ideas are implemented by the company in order to satisfy the needs and expectations of the customers. Innovation must not be confused with creativity, which is only the
generation of a unique idea that may or may not necessarily be able to be put into operation.
Leading for innovation is complex because there is no single formula or theory for a leader to follow to increase innovation. As a result, innovation leadership includes a variety of different activities, actions, and behaviors that interact to create
innovation.
Innovation Leadership Skills and Traits
The need for innovation has driven organizations to seek leaders who are capable of influencing and inspiring creative efforts. These include expertise in the field, creativity, ability to carry out transformational leadership behaviors, planning and decision-making, and social skills like emotional intelligence. Leading with innovation, also requires grit and resilience because no amount of innovation or change will come easily or without failed attempts.
An effective leader of innovation also recognizes the importance of embracing differences in people and knows how to coordinate those differences to be most effective. This is what cultivates a workplace environment of continuous
improvements, innovation and initiative. Leaders must have the commitment of the team to embrace an innovation mindset.
Innovation leadership is about figuring out where and how you can add value. Its about how quickly you can unlearn, relearn and master new talents and skills. Its about how you engage others at a deeper, more empathetic and passionate
level.
Innovative leaders are brave when it comes to experimenting with new ideas. Innovation involves a great deal of risk, and an innovation leader has high risk tolerance.
Innovative leaders are also very curious. They display an interest and need to know more. These leaders will take the initiative to learn new information.
Innovative leaders are proactive and confident. They do not avoid conflicts or differences of opinion. They understand that that unique and diverse perspectives and ideas are the key to innovation, but are also confident enough to know when to stop. They know when an idea or initiative is dead, and they arent afraid to make the call. An innovation leader facilitates the process of collaboration and encourages open dialogue between people. Creative insights that come from
intelligent and non-judgmental sharing of ideas can give rise to continual innovation that drives the organization. Innovation leaders are grounded and have their emotions under control. Mood swings are not helpful to any workplace, but
especially to one that strives to be innovative. Ideally, an innovation leader is wired to be cheerful and optimistic in order to maintain a similar stable environment in the workplace.
Risk tolerant
Innovation requires taking risks. If a leader is not risk tolerant, they wouldnt be the right fit for an innovation leader.
Open-minded
Innovation leaders must be accepting of new ideas and perspectives.
Flexible
People cant be creative under strict guidelines and rules. Innovation leaders must be flexible with both their leadership style and with how they approach new idea formulation, design, and implementation.
Emotionally intelligent
Innovation requires risk-taking, and when you take more risks you are likely to have more failures. If every failure brings about emotional instability, you are not cut out to be an innovation leader. Innovation leaders can recognize and regulate
their emotions even under states of stress and turmoil.
Value differences
Diversity is required of innovative organizations. Research has shown that organizations that are diversity are far more likely to innovation. If you dont value you the differences in your diverse workforce and create an inclusive environment,
you are not the right fit to be a leader.
Innovation Leadership Styles
There are many leadership styles, however, they are not all created equal when it comes to their ability to create innovative environments. Leadership styles that focus on leading using power, control, and hierarchy (like autocratic leadership)
are typically not successful in creating an environment of innovation. However, styles that are flexible and adaptable are the best suited for innovation leadership. Some of these styles include visionary, coaching, and charismatic leadership
styles. However, the style most suited for innovation is transformational.
Transformational leadership encourages leaders that inspire, empower, motivate, and encourage employees to innovate to help grow and mold the future success of the company.
Transformational leaders motivate and inspire their employees without micromanaging. They trust employees to take power over decisions in their jobs. This style is designed to give employees more room to be creative and find new solutions to old problems.
