fter reading this week’s readings and lesson, burglary can be defined as the illegal entering of a structure to include a home, a business, dwelling and boat to commit any type of crime, and not just to steal something. There does not have to be any type of forced entry and the suspect can just walk through an open door. (Reuters, 2019) According to Fisher & Fisher (2012) burglary is a very common crime that police investigate and there a very specific ways to go about investigating a crime scene for a burglary. Fisher and Fisher (2012) describe how the first officer to arrive on scene of a burglary needs to be thinking about the potential location of the suspect in case the suspect tripped an alarm and was unaware. The next step is to either arrest the suspect if they are still on scene or to secure the crime scene and witnesses should then be separated for questioning. (Fisher & Fisher, 2012) A search of the crime location should then happen.
According to Fisher and Fisher (2012) burglars with a lot of practice usually will not leave behind a lot of evidence so the investigating officers should be looking to collect things such as fingerprints, shoe prints, tool marks, and possibly any DNA evidence left behind by the suspect. The officer or investigator may also look to see if there have been any other burglaries that match the same type as the one, they are currently investigating. (Fisher & Fisher, 2012)
