Language barrier I faced at the host family

I came to the United States as an international student and lived with an American family for one year

I arrived in the United States as an international student and was placed with an American host family

I did not speak English then, so communicating with my host family was challenging

The language barrier was extreme as I did not understand English

However, my family helped me understand the English language

Language challenges I faced in family and others

One of the biggest challenges I faced as an international student living with an American family was communication

My host family could not speak my local language.

There were also many misunderstandings due to the language barrier

I was also constantly feeling like I was missing out on important information

Another challenge I faced was making friends

I did not reach out to people very much. Due to language barrier.

III. How I overcame the language barrier

I enrolled in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class

I tried to speak English as much as possible outside of class

I also utilized various resources to help me learn English.

I was patient and recognized that it would take time to become proficient in English

Languages and cultural differences

Communication happened in the two cultures

United States is often more informal and direct.

In my home country, it is common for people to greet each other with a hug or a kiss on the cheek.

Overall experience

I became more confident in my English skills.

I have enjoyed living in the United States and learned much about the culture

Over that year, I began feeling more at home in the United States

I am so grateful for that experience.

The experience changed my perspective in several ways.

I developed a greater appreciation for the value of education.
