Life Span Human Development Assignment
Description
Objective
We are surrounded by information daily and not all of this information is delivered for the same reason. Some is to inform and some is to influence. To complicate matters, even popularly held information isnt necessarily valid. The purpose of this project is to help you identify and develop tools to successfully distinguish between accurate information and misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda.
Part 1: Information, Misinformation, Propaganda, and Disinformation
The first step towards information literacy is to define our terms. There are distinct and very important differences between information, misinformation, propaganda, and disinformation. For the first part of this project, I want you to provide definitions for each.
Watch the following video, The Darker Side of Media:

Provide definitions for the terms: misinformation, propaganda, and disinformation.
Find an online source that you believe is a representation of each. Explain, for each, why you believe it to be so. Make sure to include the web address for each in your response.

Media Skills: Crash Course Media Literacy #11This video provides a basic overview of media skills that are handy to know when evaluating media. Media literacy is defined as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication. After watching the video on Media Skills, answer each of the following:
What is the meaning of each of the following aspects of media literacy: access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act?
What is the foundation of media analysis?
What are the five questions proposed by Renee Hobbs that should be asked when making a media choice?
What, according to the video, are the four key things to look out for when evaluating media? Provide a brief definition for each.
It seems as if everything these days is political and people are absorbing news media more than ever before. Not surprisingly, there is often differences between media sources in reporting the same news story.OK, now that you have some tools to help you evaluate media that you encounter, lets put these skills to work
For this part of the project, I want you to, 1) identify a specific news story, and 2) find reporting on this news story on two popular news outlets: CNN (cnn.com) and Fox News (foxnews.com). Then provide each of the following:
What news story did you identify?
Evaluate both reports of the news story in terms of analysis and evaluation that you detailed in questions 3 and 4 above. Provide your detailed evaluation of each.
What is your overall conclusion of the reporting of this news item?
What is a take-home message that you could tell another person regarding what you have learned through this information literacy project?Life Span Human Development Assignment
