Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey Analysis
Description
The purpose of the Short Paper is to allow you an opportunity to practice the skill of applying a definition to a literary text. You will be demonstrating that you can take the definition of Romanticism and use it to develop a close reading of a text in a short, focused, formal paper.
Due Date and Grade Percentage: The Short Paper is due at the end of Week 3 and is worth 15 points of your final grade.
Content of Paper:
You will use the definitions of Romanticism in the British Library article “The Romantics” (found at https://www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/articles/the-romantics) and apply them to “Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey” by William Wordsworth. Be sure to refer to the article in your paper. No outside research is permitted. The paper should focus solely on the application of these definitions of Romanticism to the text from our syllabus.
Questions to consider:
Is the work typical of Romanticism? Why or why not?
What characteristics of Romanticism as defined in the article does the work have, specifically?
Are there any aspects of the work that are not typical of Romanticism?
Would you characterize the writer as a typical Romantic based on the definition? Why or why not?
How does a definition of Romanticism help us to understand the writer and his or her work better?
Format: The paper should include the following elements:
A meaningful title that sets up the idea of the paper
A clear introduction to the definition of Romanticism that you will be applying to the chosen poem
A clearly identifiable thesis statement at the end of the introduction that explains what the application of this theory will reveal about the poem
At least three body paragraphs, each of which contains a topic sentence and supporting sentences
Specific evidence (examples and quotes) from the chosen text in the body paragraphs to support the analysis in the paper
A clear conclusion that ends the paper (but does not just summarize it)
Page Count: At least two pages but no more than three pages (500-700 words); the page and word counts do not include the Works Cited page.Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey Analysis
