STEP 2: Situation and Setting: What Happens? Where? When?
Questions about the speaker in a poem (Who? Questions) lead to questions about What? And Why? as well as Where? and When? First you identify the imagined situation in the poem: To whom is the speaker speaking? Is there an auditor in the poem? Is anyone else present or referred to in the poem? What is happening? Why is this event or communication occurring, and why is it significant? As soon as you zoom in on the answers to such questions about persons and actions, you also encounter questions about place and time. (Where and when does the action or communication take place?) In other words, situation entails setting (Mays 442).
Questions for responding to the poem you have selected:
1. What is the central setting and situation from the poem you have selected? How are they significant?
2. How do the details of the setting help to define the situation and its significance?
3. Do any other situations and settings appear in the poem, and how so?
Think about the poetry selections above and consider the situation and setting of each poem. Consider the steps below and questions to ask when reading and analyzing poetry (from Mays 414-422) as you answer the prompt in STEP 4 below:
1. Listen to a poem first.
2. Articulate your expectations, starting with the title.
3. Read the syntax literally.
a. Identify sentences
b. Re-order sentences
c. Replace each pronoun with the antecedent noun it replaces.
d. Translate sentences into modern prose.
e. Note any ambiguities in the original language that you might have ignored in your translation.
4. Consult reference works. (continued on next page . . .)
5. Figure out who, where, when, and what happens.
6. Formulate tentative answers to the questions: Why does it matter? What does it all mean?
7. Consider how the poems form contributes to its effect and meaning.
8. Investigate and consider the ways the poem both uses and departs from poetic conventions, especially those related to form and subgenre.
9. Argue.
