Hannah Baker is the primary character in “Thirteen Reasons Why,” a Netflix series. She is a seventeen-year-old Liberty High School student. She was confronted with a number of difficulties at school, which led to her despair. The series uses characters, namely Hannah Baker, to depict the many situations that kids go through in high school. It explains how these difficulties can develop to mental illnesses like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder if they are not addressed properly by school administrators, parents, and peers. It backs with previous research findings showing women suffer from depression at a higher rate than men in today’s culture (Jorden, 2019).
Hannah Baker began to show early indications of melancholy when a picture taken by Justin Foley, which revealed her undergarments, was disseminated in the school. She became a laughingstock, and everyone rejected her, including one of her closest friends, Clay Jensen. “What if the only way not to feel horrible is to cease feeling anything at all, forever?” Hannah wrote in one of the first episodes of season one, and it was read out in class. Wikiversity (Wikiversity, 2020). This was proof of suicidal ideation as a result of depression. Hannah, meantime, tells Clay during a party, “What is the point of it all? Do you ever think to yourself, “I can’t do it any longer?” I really want to die. Everything is dark, for example.” Wikiversity (Wikiversity, 2020). Ryan Shaver also let Hannah Baker down when he published her poem in the school newsletter without her permission. This could have had a role in her depression.
Hannah Baker was involved in a number of guilt cases that could have harmed her mental health (Wikiversity, 2020). She misplaced her parents’ money on her way to the bank to deposit it. This infuriated them greatly. To keep their family together, Hannah had to keep her father’s affair hidden from her mother. Hannah held herself responsible for Jessica’s rape since she remained silent while Bryce assaulted her; she felt betrayed by her family and friends. She assumed she wasn’t good enough to be loved, especially when Zach distanced himself from her after their summer connection (Wikiversity, 2020). Hannah bottled up all of her feelings to the point where she became depressed.
