Instructions:
For this course, the Case Tasks are closely linked to the SLP and Discussion assignments. In this Case Assignment, you’ll think about some of the more abstract concepts that will help you structure your team and its work. Your objective is to apply what you’ve learned from the Cases to the way you put together your team. The goal is for you to be able to learn and implement what contemporary management “gurus” are saying us about how to work in virtual teams by the end of the course, and to be able to evaluate how effective these practices are.
Assignment of a Case
The effort of balancing “togetherness” and “apartness” is arguably the most difficult component of forming and maintaining an efficient virtual team. The background reading provided some insight into this question. Now read the following piece, which elaborates on this theme:
J. Nemiro, J. Nemiro, J. Nemiro, J (n.d.). Chapter 1: Outlining the creative process and approach to work design. Key components for success in virtual teams are discussed in Creativity in Virtual Teams: Key Components for Success (pp. 3-23). John Wiley & Sons is a publishing house based in the United Kingdom. http://media.wiley.com/product data/excerpt/46/07879711/0787971146.pdf was retrieved from http://media.wiley.com/product data/excerpt/46/07879711/0787971146.pdf.
After you’ve gone over the information in this reading, as well as the background readings and any additional research materials you want to use, you should:
Consider how a virtual team might achieve the optimal mix of connectedness and apartness. You’ll want to think about how virtual teams are structured and how leadership is handled in particular.
What are the choices for virtual team work design and leadership?
How do task requirements and team characteristics influence work design and leadership decisions (such as rotating, for example)? If possible, be precise and provide instances.
Assess the virtual teaming effectiveness of the structures/practices discussed in this module’s readings. (To put it another way, do they work, or are the readings’ authors hopelessly out of touch with reality?)
