MGT422 Introduction To Decision Making is a course that teaches you how to make decisions.
Overview of the Task
Despite having a 65 percent market share in its home market of Australia, prominent Australian airline Qantas is having a difficult time, as are many other airlines around the world. Qantas has recently been losing money because to rising fuel costs and a slowing global economy, and CEO Alan Joyce faces some difficult decisions.
Joyce will have to decide whether or not to sell Qantas’ frequent flyer program. Although it may seem strange for an airline to sell its frequent flyer program, Qantas’ program is much more than that. Members of this program can earn points not only by traveling with Qantas, but also by shopping at one of the airline’s corporate partners or by using one of their credit cards. Points can be redeemed for free flights as well as merchandise from a variety of stores. This rewards program is used by almost 10 million Australians, or about half of the population.
Qantas’ most valuable asset is its frequent flyer program, and selling it would help the airline get out of its current financial difficulties. Selling the program, on the other hand, would provide another corporation access to Qantas’ most loyal clients, including business and first-class passengers. In the long run, the sale has the potential to backfire and be unwise.
Research CEO Joyce’s current decision on whether or not to sell the frequent flyer program, as well as the background materials on intuitive versus logical decision-making, such as Buhler (2001) and Kourdi (2001). (2011). Your task will be to apply the concepts from the background materials to Joyce’s present major choice.
To get you started, here are some Qantas-specific articles:
K. Ross (2014, Aug 27). Qantas’ CEO is faced with difficult decisions. [Proquest] Wall Street Journal
R. Ironside (2014, Aug 15). Qantas has issued a warning to ground operators about selling frequent flyer programs. [Proquest] The Gold Coast Bulletin
P. Gilder (2014, Mar 29). The future of loyalty is uncertain. [Proquest] The Gold Coast Bulletin
Australia’s Qantas frequent flyer program has surpassed the ten million member threshold. (2014). [Proquest] MENA Report
Assignment of a Case
Write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following issues once you’ve done reading about Qantas and researching the background literature, such as Buhler (2001) and Kourdi (2003).
1. Is it a strategic or operational decision whether or not to sell Qantas’ frequent flyer program? Is it a pre-programmed or ad hoc decision? Use references to Buhler (2001) or Kourdi (2001) to support your response (2003).
2. Assume Alan Joyce decides to approach the choice of whether or not to sell the frequent flyer program rationally. Include specifics about what kind of information or choices should be evaluated at each step in a step-by-step strategy you would recommend. Don’t just list the steps; go into detail about each one, drawing on your Qantas research as well as Buhler (2001) or Kourdi (2003) for inspiration.
3. Joyce has been the CEO of Qantas for the past six years and has extensive airline management expertise. Do you think Joyce should make this decision based on logic or intuition, based on his experience? Would you advise a new CEO who comes from another business and has no prior airline expertise to take a rational or intuitive approach? Explain your reasons and offer suitable references to Buhler (2001) or Kourdi (2003).
